Acne Scars / Acne Scar Treatments / Keloids Treatments Keloids TreatmentsFor skin abnormalities and disorders there are a number of treatments available which can be sought by the person who is suffering from these abnormalities and disorders. Keloids are gentle fibrous growths that arise from proliferation of dermal tissue following skin injury. The conventional treatment options for Keloids are occlusive dressings which sometimes include silicon based materials, intra-lesion injections of corticosteroid, and also surgeries like excision and cryosurgery. The more modernistic approach on treatment includes various laser treatments like carbon dioxide laser, Nd:YAG laser, argon laser, pulsed dye laser, intra-lesional interferon-gamma and interferon-alfa 2b, and cultured epithelial autografts. The chances of recurrence of the problem exist in both the conventional therapy and the laser treatment, however the chances of reappearance is high following conventional forms of treatment. The recurrence rate of keloids after excision alone has been reported to be between 45 and 100%. This rate is higher for those patients who have a history of Keloids in the family. The most successful treatment in regards to recurrence of the problem is the post-operative radiation therapy and it has been deemed to be safe and effective in reducing recurrence of keloids after excision surgery. It is also considered the simpler of the two procedures. No matter what form of treatment you choose in treating your Keloids it should be done with the advice of one or more specialist to not only tell you the best treatment but also prepare you with the mental aspects which are as important in treatments. |
